Which are the vehicle categories of Aegean Motorway?

The vehicle categories of Aegean Motorway are set as follows:

Category 1: Bicycles, tricycles.

Category 2: Light vehicles (Vehicles with or without trailer and height up to 2,20m).

Category 3: Vehicles with or without trailer with two or three axles and a height greater than 2,20m.

Category 4: Vehicles with or without trailer with two or three axles and a height greater than 2,20m.

Where are toll revenues expended?

Tolls constitute the main source of financing for the Aegean Motorway Concession Project. Toll revenue are used for:

  • the construction of the New Sections of the Motorway
  • the maintenance of the Motorway
  • the operation of the Motorway and the services provided to the users
  • the repayment of the bank loans used for Project financing
  • payments to the State
  • the repayment of equity

Which vehicles are exempted from paying tolls?

According to the Concession Agreement that has been signed between Aegean Motorway and the Greek State (Law 3605/2007, Gov. Gazette Α’ 190/8.8.2007), the following categories are exempted from paying tolls: Police vehicles, Fire Brigade vehicles, Army vehicles, vehciles belonging to the Service or its representatives (Egnatia Odos SA, Independent Engineer), Ambulances, Concessionaire’s/ Contractor’s/ Operator’s vehicles provided that they are moving on the Main Concession Project for the purposes of the Concession Agreement

Overweight/Over-sized Vehicles

Why is it necessary for the Passage Informaiton Form to be issued?

The Passage Information Forms is a service provided by Aegean Motorway to professional drivers advising them on whether overweight-oversize vehicles/ project machinery can travel on the motorway depending on the scheduled works and the existing traffic conditions. The service is provided to ensure high standards of customer care to professional drivers and users of the motorway and high levels of safety on the motorway.

It is clarified that the Passage Information Form DOES NOT constitute a passage permit and does not substitute the passage permit for oversize – overweight vehicle/ project machinery foreseen by art 53 of the Traffic Code.

Which vehicles are classified as Oversize/ Over-height vehicles?

According to the law, oversize/ over-height vehicles are vehicles the dimensions of which exceed:

  • Width > 2,55 m
  • Length > 18,75 m
  • Height > 4,0 m
  • Weight > 44 tons

Does an oversize/ over-height vehicle/ project machinery need a vehicle to accompany it

According to Presidential Decree 1161/1977, as this has been amended and in force, the transporter is legally obliged to ensure that the Oversize/ over-height vehicles are accompanied during their journey by other vehicles that are equipped with warning lights. Such vehicles are provided either by the security/ safety service providers of L. 2518/1997, or by the businesses themselves, provided that they fulfill the conditions of the said law.

For which days/ hours are the Passage Information Forms issued/ valid for

The Passage Information Forms are issued and are valid for from Monday to Friday, sunrise – to sunset, apart from bank holidays and days when traffic prohibitions apply.

What is the maximum height allowed for a vehicle to travel on Aegean Motorway?

Vehicles with a maximum height of up to 4.80m may, following the issuance of the Passage Information Form, safely move on the whole length of ATHE motorway, from Raches to Kleidi, which is the section managed by Aegean Motorway.

Vehicles with a height exceeding 4.80m. may have to take an alternative route outside the motorway in order to avoid structures (bridges) and tunnels with lower free height. It is clarified that Aegean Motorway is not liable for the transit of Oversize/ Over-height vehicles & Project Machinery via alternative routes on the motorway service network. For such journeys, the transporters must contact the competent Authorities and Services.
