Progress Of Works

The Total Progress of the Project (as at end October 2011) is at 66% and concerns:

- New sections (open motorway) 33%

- New sections (tunnels) 86%

- Existing motorway 100%

Construction of New Sections

In the core of the Project are found 3 two-way tunnels with a total length of 21.3 Km. at the Tempi Valley and Platamonas, which after decades will finally become reality, connecting Northern Greece and the Balkans with the rest of the country safely and fast.

All three tunnels are built at the same time on two fronts (North and South) while at the same time the two traffic directions are being opened. Each traffic direction will include two traffic lanes and a full emergency lane with a total road surface width of 10.5 meters.

Currently 86% of the works for the tunnels have been completed, and the progress on the open new sections of the motorway stands at about 33%, as the necessary expropriations have not yet been concluded hence leading to delays.

It is possible that the size and importance of this construction Project cannot be fully understood at this time as the respective construction works are not directly visible to drivers who still use the existing section from Evangelismos to Leptokarya, however, this is bound to change when the new sections of the motorway will be made available to traffic.

Upgrading of Existing Sections

Existing Motorway – K.P. 240+400 – 375+820 and 406+090 to 469+700, a total of 199.03 Km.

Old National Road – K.P. 375+400 to K.P. 390+633 – and K.P. 399+900 to K.P. 409+700, a total of 25.03 Km.

The upgrading of the existing Motorway sections has been completed along the entire Project as follows:

  • over 4,000,000 sq.m. asphalt laying
  • new carriageway marking throughout the entire length of the road (approximately 300,000 sq.m.)
  • repair of 200,000 m of safety parapets
  • 12,000 m. fencing installed
  • full rehabilitation of the green part and the irrigation system
  • full rehabilitation of the road lighting
  • installation of emergency telephones at 2 Km. intervals
  • installation of CCTV system to monitor the project intersections
  • traffic measuring system operation
  • installation of fiber optic network
  • installation of rockfall protection at the Tempi Valley
  • cleaning and rehabilitation of the operation of the sewage - drainage system, as well as cleaning and repair of wear in rainwater runoff culverts located along the entire length of the Aegean Motorway and the Old National Road
  • upgrading of 27 parking spaces through the construction and operation of toilets and the installation of emergency telephones

All reconstruction works for the existing road network have been completed. (2.5 months ahead of the time scheduled)
