The Project

The Maliakos-Kleidi section of the PATHE Motorway, namely the Aegean Motorway, extends from Raches in the Prefecture of Fthiotida to Kleidi, Imathia, covering a total of 230 Km.

The project "Design, Construction, Financing, Operation, Maintenance and Exploitation of Motorway PATHE Section Maliakos – Kleidi" was auctioned in 2001. On 28.6.2007, Aegean Motorway SA signed a Concession Agreement with the Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning, and Public Works. The Concession Agreement was ratified on 8.8.2007 by the Greek Parliament by Law 3605/2007.

The Project undertaken by Aegean Motorway SA comprises the repair and upgrading of the existing motorway, the construction of a new section of the motorway as well as its operation and maintenance for 30 years.

The construction of the new section of the motorway includes:

  • 2 twin tunnels at the Tempi Valley, 2 and 6 Km. long (the largest road tunnel in the Balkans)
  • 1 twin tunnel in Platamonas 2.7 Km. long
  • 14 Km. of open road construction
  • 17 Km of secondary roads and service roads
  • 22 bridges
  • 5 interchanges
  • Tunnel service buildings, etc.

In addition, 5 new Motorist Service Stations per direction are to be constructed and operate along the motorway.

Objective

The Project’s objective is to remove the last, really dangerous and key point of the Athens-Thessaloniki road connection, for which a high blood toll has been paid. It is a public work of immense national importance with social and financial benefits for the entire country in the medium and long run.
